Arranging a funeral: Where do I begin?

Funerals are something many of us tend to avoid talking about! It is something that most of us will only have to arrange once maybe twice in our lifetime. However, the thought of planning a funeral can bring about feelings of dread and sadness that add to the pressures of getting it right, as well as meeting the expectations of family and friends.

When a loved one passes away, it is one of the most difficult times of our lives. The way in which we plan to celebrate and mark a life that’s passed can become a special and meaningful event that brings much comfort and solace.

As a profession, funeral directors are generally well-trained experts in enabling families to create bespoke celebrations of life and relieving the burden and pressure of the many difficult decisions to be made. As a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors, we are regularly inspected and professionally required to be able to meet the needs of our clients.

Families come to Legacy Funeral Directors at such an emotive and personal time. We are here to support and guide them through the difficult decisions in the most sensitive and caring ways we can. Every funeral is unique! What is important and the main focus of one; will be different from another and so every family is supported individually.

The registration of a death is usually the first concern when planning a funeral. Depending on where and how someone dies will affect the direction of this stage. Expected deaths in hospital, hospices and homes will usually be registered after the G.P. or hospital/hospice Doctor has produced a medical certificate of attendance. However if someone dies suddenly or unexpectedly the HM Coroner will take over, often requiring a post mortem examination, allowing a pathologist to present their findings to determine the cause of death. The Coroner’s involvement can have many directions and they will advise accordingly.

At the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, the Registrar will provide families with copies of the death certificate (note there is a charge per copy), as well as a special ‘green certificate’ which your funeral director will need.

Burial or Cremation? Deciding which path the funeral will take is a personal one, that should be discussed with the relevant family members/friends. Once decided, the delicate process of planning a funeral begins!
